DOL Testing for Motorcycle/Trike/Sidecar Endorsement

Motorcyclists must take their knowledge and skills tests for their endorsements (2 wheel motorcycle or 3 wheel sidecar/trike) at an approved motorcycle training school, like Evergreen Motorcycle Safety Training instead of the Department of Licensing.

No appointments are necessary for knowledge testing. Knowledge testing is at the Totem Lake facility only, Monday through Friday between 9am and 4pm (except major holidays). Pre-registration is required for other locations and/or weekends.

Motorcycle skills’ testing is regularly scheduled every Friday at 9am at the Totem Lake location. Pre-registration is not required but there is no guarantee that the testing session will take place without pre-registrations.

Sidecar/Trike skills’ testing is scheduled by request. Pre-registration is required for Sidecar/Trike skills testing..

Students registered for a motorcycle safety class DO NOT register to take this DOL Testing.

Students registered for a motorcycle safety class will be taking their motorcycle knowledge and skills test during their motorcycle safety class to qualify for their endorsement license waiver. Testers under the age of 18 years old are required to take a motorcycle safety class to get their motorcycle endorsements. These classes include testing:

What is needed to take the DOL testing

Vehicle Check

For the skills test, riders will need to bring their own 2-wheel motorcycle or 3-wheel motorcycle and photo identification such as a driver’s license. The motorcycle must be a street legal motorcycle that is registered to ride on the road (has a current license plate). The following will be verified at the time of testing:

You must have an endorsement or instructional permit to legally ride your motorcycle to class or a testing session.

Rider Check

To skills test, applicants are required to bring photo identification and wear (minimum) protective gear, as defined by RCW 46.37.530:

On the day of testing if the rider does not meet the gear and vehicle standards or if the issue is not immediately resolvable, the test will not be conducted and the applicant will be directed to call the office to reschedule for a fee of $50.00.

In addition to what is required, Evergreen Safety Council strongly recommends that the rider wear the following additional items when skills testing:

The DOL testing consists of the following

Knowledge Test

For the knowledge test, testers are required to bring photo identification such as a driver’s license. The motorcycle knowledge test consists of 25 multiple choice questions. You must receive a score of at least 80% correct to pass. Retest fees are $50.00.

Testing is open from 9am – 4pm, Monday through Friday (except major holidays) at the Totem Lake facility only.

To prepare for the test, be sure to take a look at the DOL Motorcycle Operator Manual.

Skills Test

The motorcycle skills test consists of five separate evaluations or runs:

There is no “skills practice” time before you take the test. If you feel that you need some practice time consider taking one of our motorcycle safety classes where you get to practice and take both the written and skills test. You can also see examples of the skills test here and in the sidebar.

Knowledge and skill tests can be taken separately or at the same time/location.

Testing Fees

Taken separately, each test (knowledge and skills) is $50 each.

Cancellation/Refunds/Transfers Policy

If you cancel at least 24 hours prior to the test there will be a $15 administration fee. If you do not show up, there is no refund or reschedule. You will need to pay again to take the test(s).

Retest Fees: All retest fees are $50 per test. You must wait at least 24 hours before retesting.

DOL will also have licensing fees that you will pay when you go to get your endorsement added to your license.
